Why Maharishi Agastya went South and not East to stop Vindhya Mountain from growing?
We all know about the Vindhya mountain ranges in central India. Vindhya mountain range is one of the only two mountain ranges mentioned in Indian National Anthem. Vindhya mountain range is spread across central India parallel to River Narmada in East-West direction. The extent of Vindhya mountain range is considered from Bihar-Uttar Pradesh in the East till Gujrat in the West.
But how many of us know the connection between Vindhya mountain range and Maharishi Agastya?
Let us try to explore!
The connection between Vindhya mountain range and Maharishi Agastya
Maharishi Agastya is one of the most important Vedic sages. There are many temples in India where Maharishi Agastya is worshiped. Maharishi Agastya is considered as the father of Tamil language. Maharishi Agastya is named the author of several hymns of the Rigveda. It is mentioned that he was master of Sanskrit and Tamil both.
There is one well-known story about Maharishi Agastya and Vindhya mountain. Once all Devatas approached Maharishi Agastya with a complaint regarding Vindhya mountain. Devatas told Maharishi Agastya that height of Vindhya mountain is growing day by day and Vindhya mountain is trying to compete with Meru mountain. Meru mountain is the abode of all devatas and if Vindhya mountain grows higher than Meru mountain it will obstruct the sun and Meru mountain will never receive sunlight. In that case, Devatas will not be able to survive without sunlight and power of Daityas will grow.
Devatas asked Maharishi Agastya for help. Maharishi Agastya promised Devatas that he will do something to stop Vindhya mountain from growing. Maharishi Agastya knew that Vindhya mountain respects him a lot and Vindhya mountain will never break the promise given to him.
So, one-day Maharishi Agastya started his journey towards South. On the way, he saw Vindhya mountain. Maharishi Agastya asked Vindhya mountain to bow down so that he can cross him and asked for a promise that he will not stand again unless he comes back from his southward journey. Vindhya mountain promised Maharishi Agastya that he will remain in bowed position till he comes back from his southward journey.
Maharishi Agastya crossed Vindhya mountain and never came back to North. Due to his promise, Vindhya mountain never grew higher again and Devatas were saved by Maharishi Agastya.
If we try to analyze this story, this story seems to be very normal Indian mythological story. But there is one amazing and unrevealed part of this story. We all know that Sun rises from East and sets in the west then Maharishi Agastya should have gone towards East and not towards South so that Sun can cross Vindhya mountain after rising from the east. To stop Sun from rising from East Vindhya mountain range should be spread in the North-South direction like a wall and not in East-West direction.
So, are we missing something here? Or is there anything that we don't know? Or this story is a total fiction?
Let's try to find out!
Scientific Analysis of the story
There are three important things mentioned in this story.
1) Meru Mountain is the abode of Devatas.
2) Vindhya Mountain is spread across East-West direction and its growing height was a concern for Devatas.
3) Maharishi Agastya went South to stop Vindhya mountain from growing.
From above three statements it seems that Vindhya mountain was obstructing Sun to rise from South! Maharishi Agastya went to South so that Sun can rise from South and it can cross Vindhya mountain and provide Sunlight to Meru mountain which is the highest mountain present to the North of Vindhya mountain!
Above conclusions seems to be very fictitious. But is there any place on Earth where Sun rises from South? The answer to this question is 'YES'.
Surprised! The only region on Earth where Sun rises from South is the North Pole. Northern Polar Region is the Northernmost part of the Earth. If we consider Earth's Equatorial plane as base surface then the North Pole is the highest point on the Earth where Sun rises from South and day and night are of 6 months each.
If we consider Northern Polar Region as the abode of Devatas then Sun would rise from South once in a year. As Vindhya mountain is spread across East-West direction it can act like a huge wall which can stop Sun from rising. Maharishi Agastya crossed Vindhya mountain while going from North to South. While his stay in Southern part he introduced a new language to the world i.e. Tamil. One can easily notice that Tamil is most spoken in Southern part of India and Asia.
So, if Meru mountain is nothing but the North Pole of the earth?
The similarity between the description of Meru mountain and North Pole of Earth points towards the fact that there is some connection of scientific facts about the earth and Indian mythological stories which need to be explored.
