Why Pandavas started walking towards North after they left their kingdom?
Most of us know about the bravery shown by Pandavas during Mahabharata war. Under the guidance of Lord Shree Krishna, Pandavas defeated Kauravas and regained their kingdom. Pandavas ruled for many years.
But how many of us know about how Pandavas ended their lives?

Mahaprasthanika Parva
Mahaprasthanika Parva of Mahabharata recites the end journey of Pandavas. During this end journey Pandavas traveled across Bharat and finally, they started walking towards North where Meru Mountain and Swarga is assumed to be located.
In India, there is a tradition that during ending years of the life people leave their attachments with materialistic life and they accept Sanyasa. Similarly, Maharishi Vyasa adviced Pandavas to leave their kingdom and start walking towards the abode of Devatas i.e. Swarga or Meru Mountain which is situated in North direction. At the end, only Yudhishthir could make it to Meru Mountain. Other Pandavas died during this northwards journey. At the end, all the Pandavas and Draupadi got a place in Swarga.
But why it is considered that Meru mountain and Swarga is situated in the North? Is there any scientific fact hidden behind this story?

The scientific significance of North direction
North direction has a special place in Indian culture. It is mentioned in many ancient Indian scriptures that abode of Devatas i.e. Meru Mountain and Swarga is situated in North direction.
The only constant thing in the sky is North Pole Star or Dhruva. North Pole Star or Dhruva is considered as most sacred in ancient Indian scriptures. The view of the sky is totally different at the North Pole when compared with equatorial regions.
So, it seems that some observations which can only be observed around North Polar Region have special importance in ancient India scriptures. These scientific facts observed in North Polar Region have a deep connection with ancient Indian mythological stories which needs to be explored.
