Are you a Yoga trainer or Yoga practitioner? Do you know the scientific connection between Yoga and Astronomy?

Yoga is considered the best practice to achieve mental and physical fitness. Crores of people around the world are practicing Yoga daily to maintain their mental and physical wellness. Yoga is now included as core subject like sports, etc. in the curriculum of many schools and colleges. Asanas and Pranayam are two main parts of Yoga. Yoga trainer and practitioner are expected to have good knowledge of yogic concepts regarding the human body. Understanding of yogic concepts regarding human body and mind helps yoga trainer and practitioner to get maximum benefit out of asanas and pranayama.

Let's try to explore some basic Yogic concepts and its connection with the science of astronomy.

Some basic Yogic concepts:

Basic Yogic concepts are explained in Patanjali Yog Sutra and Vyas Sutra. Here are some of the explanations which are mentioned in Patanajali Yog Sutra and Vyas Sutra:
1) In Yoga Sutra it is mentioned that in Yoga human body of a Yogi is compared with Earth.
2) It is mentioned that there are seven upper chakra and seven lower chakras in the human body. At the bottom of upper chakras i.e. at the lowest point of the spinal cord, there is Muladhara Chakra or Earth Chakra. At the top of upper chakras i.e. on the top of the head, there is Sahasrara Chakra. Around the chest area, there is Surya Chakra or Anahata Chakra.

It is said that the Yogic power of a normal person is present in Muladhara chakra. By practicing Yoga for the long duration this Yogic power reaches Sahasrara chakra which is the ultimate aim of Yoga.

What could be the connection of Yoga with the science of astronomy:

Now let's try to understand how the human body could be compared with Earth as per yogic concepts.

We all know that Earth has two poles i.e. the North Pole and the South Pole. North Pole star is present very close to the axis joining the South Pole and the North Pole. So, North Pole Star appears fixed at one position. Earths equator is nearly aligned with the plane of our Solar System. Due to this, the Sun, the Moon, and other planets appear to rotate close to the equator when observed from Earth and they never go close to the axis joining the North Pole or the South Pole.

If we consider the North Pole as head of the body of the Earth and the South Pole as the foot of the Earth, Sun appears to rotate close to Heart region or central region of Earth. Here we can imagine the head of the human body is like North Pole of Earth. So, equatorial region of Earth looks like a base support or Mula Adhar for upper body of Earth. On the top of head i.e. above the North Pole, there are thousands of stars which appear to rotate around North Pole Star in the circular motion which like flower which thousand petals or Sahasrara Chakra. The bottom part of Earth which is below the equator are like legs of Earth. These are like lower chakras or Patal Chakras.

Above explanation and comparison of Earth and the human body will help Yoga Practitioner and Yoga trainer to provide the scientific relationship of yoga with scientific astronomical facts and observation. Ancient Sages from India tried to engage society in scientific knowledge sharing by introducing scientific concepts in different ways.
